SC Gov. Mark Sanford admits he's had an affair

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After going AWOL for seven days, Gov. Mark Sanford admitted Wednesday that he'd secretly flown to Argentina to visit a woman with whom he'd been having an affair. He apologized to his wife and four sons and said he will resign as head of the Republican Governors Association.

"I've let down a lot of people, that's the bottom line," the 49-year-old governor said at a news conference where he choked up as he ruminated with remarkable frankness on God's law, moral absolutes and following one's heart. His family did not attend.

The woman, who lives in Argentina, has been a "dear, dear friend" for about eight years but, Sanford said, the relationship didn't become romantic until a little over a year ago. He's seen her three times since then, and his wife found out about it five months ago.

I like how Republicans claim to be pro-family values and Save marriage from homosexuals, but you find that they're always the first ones to be out sleeping around on their wives and/or found in a bathroom somewhere sucking cock. Which amounts to the same thing, really.

Homosexuals are going to destroy marriage! Can you believe that? I don't. You heterosexuals seem to be doing a fine job of that on your own.

Bunch of hypocrites.

I thought leaving his four sons and wife alone on Father's Day was a nice touch. Nothing says "Family Values" like abandoning your family on a family holiday to play with a bit on the side in B.A.

Did Sanford personally make those claims?

I agree. While I think infidelity, especially when there is children involved, is a tragedy, I don't think marital fidelity should be a prerequisite for holding public office. However, in general (and yes, Harrison, Sanford did actually make claims against homosexuals and about the sanctity of marriage and was very vocal during the Clinton fiasco, etc., so Sanford is very much part of that general group) but not always Republicans run on a platform of fidelity, homosexuality is destructive, etc. But the cold hard fact is that the divorce rates in red states are higher, etc. It's the hypocrisy that burns, it's the hypocrisy that makes it everyone's business, and it takes away any credibility to the "oh noes teh gays are hurting marriage" etc. argument when the very carriers of that message themselves degrade marriage so. And it's not like Sanford has conducted himself well in the wake of all this... all those interviews about his mistress being his soul mate and the spark and all that... his kids don't need to hear that, and it hardly is in keeping with his whole "save and protect marriage as an institution" thing.
